The SBW Berlin Scholarship supports talented young individuals from abroad who have demonstrated social commitment. The scholarship aims to help these students use their acquired skills in social projects within their home countries during and after their studies.
Guidelines
Social Project
- Scholarship
recipients work on social projects during their studies in Berlin.
- These
projects ideally contribute to the charitable work of organizations in
their home countries and aim to improve living conditions there.
- Post-graduation,
recipients are expected to continue these projects in their home countries
with the support of SBW Berlin in an advisory capacity.
Target Group
- Foreign
nationals from countries in need of development support (as per guidelines).
- Holders
of a student visa or residence permit for studies.
Eligibility Requirements
- Aged
between 18 and 30.
- Professional
or volunteer experience in the non-profit/social sector, supported by
letters of recommendation.
- Have
not resided in Germany for more than 18 months prior to application.
- Hold
a university entrance qualification.
- Intend
to work for at least 18 months in their home country post-graduation or
engage in charitable activities in Germany until the repayment plan is
fulfilled.
- Have
a relatively low net income.
- Average
grade equivalent to a German GPA of at least 2.0.
- No
first-degree family members permanently residing in Germany.
- Apply
before the start of studies or be enrolled in the first, second, or maximum
third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or
apply for a master’s degree shortly before or after obtaining a bachelor’s
degree.
Application Process
Required Documents:
- Motivation
letter (maximum two pages).
- Current
curriculum vitae.
- Record
of highest education level (school or university diploma).
- Copy
of the last school or university certificate with a grade overview.
- Information
about the household's net income.
- For
applicants with a GPA of 1.5 to 2.0, outline your project idea in the
motivation letter.
Optional Documents:
- Recommendation
letters from professors, teachers, or employers.
- Job,
training, and internship certificates/reports.
- University
certificates and records of achievements obtained up to the date of the
application.
- Record
of required language skills for the desired studies.
- Evidence
of university entrance qualification.
Language Requirements:
- All
application documents must be submitted in German or English.
Translations must be provided for documents in other languages.
Deadlines:
- December
31 and June 30 each year.
Applicant Status:
- Maximum
in the third semester of Bachelor, LLM, or Master studies.
Aided/Funded Degrees:
- Bachelor,
Master, or LLM.
Fields of Study:
- All
fields of study are eligible.
Scholarship Benefits
A full scholarship includes:
- Tuition
fees.
- A
room in shared student apartments.
- A
living allowance of up to 550 Euros per month.
- Travel
expenses (if required).
- German
or English courses (if necessary).
- Subsidy
for the social project (if necessary).
Expectations for Applicants and Recipients
For Applicants:
- Demonstrate
interest in social commitment and the development of social projects.
- Collaborate
with non-profit/social institutions in the home country.
- Show
good academic performance.
- Have
a continuing education plan after graduation.
- Maintain
transparency and clear communication regarding professional goals.
For Recipients:
- Develop
social projects during the study period (2 to 8 hours of work per week).
- Maintain
good academic performance each semester.
- Actively
participate in regular project meetings and workshops at SBW Berlin.
- Write
project reports and prepare talks or presentations on the projects.
- Maintain
transparency and clear communication regarding professional goals.
- In
case of discontinuation of studies or project, and if remaining in
Germany, start a repayment plan 3 months after the end of studies or
funding period, payable in 12 monthly installments.
